FIDO2 push-button and fingerprint security keys

NEW! The FIDO standards have evolved. Since the introduction of the original FIDO U2F and UAF standards for universal multi-purpose security keys, a number of key organisations have joined and worked with the FIDO Alliance to help develop and shape what is now generally called FIDO2.

Most importantly, Microsoft have implemented FIDO2 as part of their passwordless login solution for both web services such as Office 365 and enterprise desktops joined to Azure AD.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has also adopted FIDO2 within the WebAuthn specifications, which help to standardise authentication flows for cloud service providers. And the revised FIDO Client-to-Authenticator Protocol (CTAP2), together with WebAuthn, is also now supported by most popular browsers.

FIDO’s scalable security model based on public key cryptography allows multiple independent services to be authenticated by a single token, with each one using a unique and anonymous key pair. Depending on the security key type, FIDO2 enables verification of user presence, by push button, or user identity, by fingerprint, as well as authenticating the origin, making it thoroughly resistant to phishing and man-in-the-middle attacks.

Following on from the success of the original Key-ID FIDO U2F security keys, which have helped to protect tens of thousands of customers and to enhance their security across many online services, we will soon be launching two brand new models that support a combination of FIDO2, U2F and Windows Hello on the desktop.
